Backstory

This design emerged from a late-night study session when our lead artist – simultaneously cramming for a biochemistry exam and listening to a mean classic metal playlist – experienced that magical moment of cross-disciplinary inspiration. Noticing that the standard notation for amino acid functional groups could be reimagined as tiny hands throwing rock signs, they sketched the initial concept on the back of a molecular structures handout. 

The polka dot background was inspired by the classic visualization of atomic structures as well as the spotlight patterns at rock concerts, creating a visual environment where science and music naturally overlap. The orange color choice for the devil horn hands pays homage to the traditional molecular models used in organic chemistry classes, where oxygen atoms are typically represented in red or orange. What began as a sleep-deprived joke quickly resonated with our entire design team, who recognized that the Venn diagram of people who understand amino acid structures and people who appreciate heavy metal contains a surprisingly substantial overlap.
